Use cases

Are there any user cases how these iTwin services are used in existing workflow?

  • Hi Oto,

We have had users share the iModel on the iModelHub with other participants on a project which can be viewed in any browser for review, with it either be on a tablet, phone or laptop.  We've also had other users, once the data is in the iModel, run clashes and view change sets between what was new, modified and deleted.  Once the Design Data is in an iModel on the iModelHub, you can take advantage of the iTwin Services available to you.

Also, if you have Civil3D files or Revit files, you can synchronize this data to the iModel as well with the iTwin Synchronizer to view on the iModelHub.

With the the release of MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 14, the option to synchronize with the iTwin Synchronizer to an iModel will be integrated.

Do you have a specific workflow you are trying to incorporate?

    Thanks,

    Dan

  • There is not yet a existing workflow but just based on marketing newspeak it is hard to understand how it really works together. iModels, iTwins, BIM are just a concept or vision for which a real workflow need to be assigned. There are costs associated by doing BIM or iTwins and these needs to outweight these costs. Of course not doing BIM also costs but it is harder to prove the opposite.

The workflow we see it needs to be implemented is construction project:

    1. There is a prepared building/plant design the so called "BIM model"
    2. Construction site is surveyed or existing survey is already available from design phase(less often as no one cares to make it available for builders or it is given in paper form)
    3.  Reality modelling using Contextcapture(RM).
    4. The construction site is prepared and construction staking and site layout survey is done.
    5.  Reality Modelling
    6.  Review RM mesh with BIM model and Survey
    7.  Construction starts
    8.  Do RM in each construction step, do volume calculations and clash detection with BIM model.
    9.  When outside is done. Do a regular LIDAR survey of inside and do a clash detection with 3D model.
    10.  If issues found ask for revision of BIM model.
    11.  Ideally all participants can view it online and do some basic measurements between Mesh, Point cloud(PC) and 3D model(imodel)
    12.  When interior is done do clash detection between HVAC layers in imodel and PC.
    13.  Ideally for construction manager the imodel could be used on site as Augumented reality to visualize HVAC
    14.  When construction is done do a final RM and laser scanning of interiors. BIM model should be updated as-built but no one cares as construction is done and owner thinks that BIM model equals Digital Twin.
