BRCM Version 08.11.09.35 - DWG Reference Not Showing Correctly

I've attached a dwg file in BRCM and it looks like this:

Instead of this (with Navigator version 08.11.09.713):

The dwg file has been created with AutoPLANT Modeler 8.11.12.243.

The objects missing are elsewhere in the dgn file:

  • Hi Patrick. So the missing objects are visible, they are just in the wrong positions, scattered around the drawing?
Any interesting messages in the Message Center when you open the test.dgn file?

  • Hi Matt.  Yes, scattered around the drawing.  I took an object with the same "Element ID" in BRCM & in Navigator.  The coordinates are different.

    In Navigator:

    In BRCM:

  • Well that is definitely strange, and I don't have a suggestion at the moment. Would you be able to provide the test.dgn file and the referenced DWG file? If so, you can use the Communities Secure File Upload process to upload them; they will only be accessible to Bentley.

  • Hi Matt.  I uploaded only the dwg file via the "Communities Secure File Upload".  You just need to open it on both software (BRCM & Navigator) and you should be able to reproduce what I see.

  • Patrick, I believe the different behaviors can be explained by the different versions of object enablers each application uses. Object enablers interpret custom objects, so pipes look like pipes, etc. Object enablers are supplied to Bentley DGN-based applications via RealDWG, which is typically installed automatically along with the Bentley application. BRCM V8i 08.11.09.35 and MicroStation V8i SS4 had the problem for me, and these use object enablers from RealDWG 2016. Navigator V8i 08.11.09.713, which uses object enablers from RealDWG 2014, did not have the problem for me. Nor did MicroStation CONNECT Update 6, which uses RealDWG 2017. The problem seems to be in RealDWG 2016 object enablers.

So I would say the problem will be resolved in BRCM CONNECT, which is expected to be released in early 2018.

In the meantime, you could try setting BRCM to use RealDWG 2014, assuming that is installed (it should be if the BRCM and Navigator applications you cited are installed on the same machine). You would do this with the following process (borrowed from this article):

    1. In BRCM, select Workspace > Configuration.
    2. Click New.
    3. In the Variable field, type MS_REALDWG_VERSION.
    4. In the New Value field, type 2014.
    5. Click OK until out of Workspace Configuration, clicking Yes to save changes at the prompt along the way.
    6. Restart BRCM to make the configuration variable take effect.

This process made your DWG file in BRCM look like it does in Navigator for me. I don't know if there are any ill effects from using RealDWG 2014, I guess it depends on how much you deal with DWG files in BRCM and what version those DWG files are.
