Importing A legacy drawing,

I am looking to import an older drawing Into V8i, its currently in an uncompressed file taken from an older machine. I'm not sure what version its from but is only 3 years old.

The folder contains 3 folders 1. BlkInfo, 2. Legacy Data. 3. Shortest Distance and then a drawing for each page and a corresponding BAK file.

We have a procedure using the migration wizard but it doesn't recognise the folder/file as a drawing.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • So it sounds like what you have is an Autocad format DWG file, and not a complete intelligent Promis.e project.  A project backup file would have associated database records and files as well as several configuration files that define things in the project settings and values.  So essentially, you have a plain Acad dwg file you want to import.  Without the accompanying missing files, this is essentially just a CAD file.  The symbols, wires, etc. will not be intelligent.  If you still have the older version of Promis.e running on the old machine, you could do a few things to try to get this file to be intelligent in that older discontinued Acad version.  Then once you were able to get the drawing to be recognized by the Acad version of Promis.e, you could do a proper backup to enable you to migrate it to a newer MicroStation based version of Promis.e using the Migration Wizard.

If you do not have the older Acad version of Promis.e still running, then you could import this as if it were a plain CAD dwg file.  That procedure is described in the Import Drawings wiki.  It will just be treated as a plain CAD drawing for the most part.  So if you were looking for this to be intelligent and able to edit using the normal Promis.e tools, then you may want to just redraw the page using the current version tools.

  • Thanks for the reply. I was thinking it maybe be a plain autocad file which is strange as the drawing originally was definitely created in promise. I will have a look tomorrow with the help you have given. Thanks again.

  • I'd say it was definitely created by Promis.e.  My point however, was that just a dwg file created by Promis.e is not enough to be a complete Project to Promis.e.  It is only one file of many that are need by the software to work properly.  Without the missing other files, this file will not be recognized, and will be as useful as any other plain CAD dwg file.
