Parallel Cable runs

What's the best way to create a wire symbol for parallel runs for motor leads? We usually add multiple cable symbols to the wire to show number of parallel runs but the cable report and engineering consideration doesn't like multiple cables on one line, and the cable report doesn't always work. We also need these cables to show up accurately in the cables pull report.

  • Andrew,

There is an existing Enhancement Request #16181:Paralleled cables: support for assigning and labeling parallel cable conductors. We have added you to the requestor list for the same (SR #7000821270).

My colleagues suggested following workarounds that may be useful:

    - One way to do this is to use families so that all conductors are part of the same cable id but each “set” of cables are all children of the same family.  So something like CAB1 family is for 3 sets of 3 parallel cables so it has 9 children: child1    conductor1_1

    Child2    conductor1_2

    Child3    conductor1_3

    Child4    conductor2_1

    Child5    conductor2_2

    Child6    conductor2_3

    Child7    conductor3_1

    Child8    conductor3_2

    Child9    conductor3_3

Then all conductors still have the same cable ID and show up in reports

    - You can get around the limits in the software by having extra connections points on one of the symbols, normally the motor.  Then each of the parallel cable could start at the same source but end on a different point on the motor.
With some careful symbol design and cable tag naming you can get a decent approximation.

    Hope this helps !

  • Hi Sarvesh,

please add me to the requestor list of that feature.

I have tried a "family" solution mentioned above, but it does not work as expected.

    My test family:

Then I have tried to assing two conductors to one wire:

But still I get error message, and cable manager doesn't show that connection properly:

In the same cable (e.g. 14 condutors of 1 mm2) sometimes we are not using paraller run at all, sometimes 1-2 conductors, sometimes 3-4 and so on. Only depends on needs, every time it could be different.

Extra connection points are not a good solution.
