Bentley Substation - Conduit and Cable Routing

Greetings,

I've seen some webinars and training videos and was unable to learn how to design conduits, cable paths and thus generate a report containing, for example, the total cable length. How can I do this using only Bentley Substation Connect Edition?

One of the latest videos I watched mentioned a plugin named Conduit Builder. Is it the only way to do this? If that's the case, then where can I find this plugin and how can I install it?

I appreciate any help you can offer.

Best regards,

Weberton

  • Hi Weberton,

This Conduit Builder Plugin is Tool developed by Bentley Professional Services which is used for Creating, Routing & Managing Cables and Conduit network in Bentley Substation Network.

How can I do this using only Bentley Substation Connect Edition?

Without using the above Plugin you will not be able to work with Conduits, Cable paths and Generate reports for them.

This Plugin was last compiled for Substation V8i and hence would most probably need to be recompiled for Substation CONNECT for which you will have to contact Bentley Professional Services.

    Hope This Helps!

  • Hello Satish Saptasagar,

First, I'm sorry for the delay of this reply and thank you for taking your time to help me. If you allow me, I'd like to detail this issue.

I thought that Bentley Substation alone was capable of handling all, or at least the majority, of the problems related to substation designs (i.e. 2D/3D electrical and electromechanical design, cable/wiring routing by conduits or trays, BOM, ...). Cable routing and length management is one of the most important things in substation projects, thus it's strange to depend on a plugin which seems to be third-party in the Connect Edition. So what are the alternatives?

I fruitlessly tried to insert trays as 3D objects by aligning them, only to discover that each was behaving as an single object instead of a linear one, and it didn't allow me to route cables.

The Panduit Tools and Shortest Distance seem to be almost what I was looking for, but they are related to panel designs.

Tutorials and examples indicate that the Bentley Raceway and Cable Management (BRCM) is capable of doing what I want, but it's another program and I have only access to Bentley Substation.

So, I want to know precisely what are the existing methods in Bentley Substation Connect Edition to place conduits/trays, route cables and add its lengths and characteristics to reports (BOM). Can you help me on this matter as well?

Thank you again for your dedication.

    Cordially,

    Weberton.

  • Hi Weberton,

    Thank you for the update,

Conduit Builder Plugin is not a third party Plugin but it is a Plugin developed by Bentley Professional Services for Bentley Substation V8i.

Currently you have only two options as below:

Option 1: Use Conduit Builder Plugin. You will have to contact your Account Manager with Bentley to get the details on Plugin from Bentley Professional Services.

Option 2: Use Bentley Raceway and Cable Management (BRCM) and you can use your Substation 3D models and import the same in BRCM and you can lay different Conduit or Raceway according to your requirement and Route the cables. In BRCM you can generate details on the Raceway Cable separately.  Also in BRCM CONNECT you can visualize 3D cables as well which is added benefit.

  • Satish,

Thank you for your help. The concept of a all-in-one program seems better, so I'll try to contact the support for more information on this plugin. I'll update this answer if I'm successful.

    With gratitude,

    Weberton
