This TechNote describes how shielded cables can be represented in promis•e. It is assumed that the reader understands how unshielded cables are handled in promis•e. If not please refer to the promis•e Tutorial available in the "promis-e Help" menu.
The schematic shown above was created using promis•e V8i with items from the JIC-3 catalog.
In this example the GRN conductor in the 4C+G family will be used as the shield conductor.
First a CABLE symbol was placed on the wire on line 105 using the Insert Cable function. On the Device Properties dialog, the cable was given the device tag of CAB1, the 4C+G family was selected, and the Multiple Placement option was enabled to facilitate placing the remaining CABLE symbols shown.
Next, the SHIELD macro was placed below the wire on line 111. The SHIELD macro consists of the SHIELDCP symbol and graphics for the loop. In this example, the SHIELDCP symbol was given a device tag of CAB1_SH, which makes it unique but still recognizable to the end user that it is associated with the CAB1 cable.
Alternatively, the SHIELDCP could have been given the same device ID as the cable, CAB1. In that case, a prompt will appear asking if the symbol should be appended to the device. Click the Append button to append the symbol, and then hide the cross references that will appear on the schematic by right clicking them and deselecting "Show Cross-Reference".
The graphics for the loop were then stretched to encompass all the conductors of the cable using the stretch function of the CAD platform. Being part of a macro and not a symbol allows the loop graphics to be stretched.
The GND symbol was then placed at the other end of the shield conductor.
Since the 4C+G family was selected for the cable in this example, the 4_CABLESH symbol was placed using Insert Symbol By Name while in Wiring Diagram Mode. The symbol is given the same device ID as the schematic symbols, CAB1. After selecting promis-e Output > *Report & Graphical Output > Update Wiring Diagram, and updating the page, the symbol appears as shown below. Connection point texts enlarged for clarity.
Running the Field Wire List report (promis-e Output > *Report & Graphical Output > Run Reports) results in the output shown below.
It is possible to terminate only one end of the shield conductor and not insert a symbol such as SHIELDCP on the other end. However, the end that is terminated (on the GND symbol in this example) will then be considered a "FROM" target instead of "TO" target regardless of how the schematic is drawn. Therefore, the device the shield is wired to may appear in the wrong side of the Field Wire List report and the cable cross reference symbol may need to be modified so that the hidden connection point text for the shield conductor is set to "From" instead of "To" (i.e. changed from T5 to F5 in this example).
