there was an old forum entry concerning exactly my question: why does the variable MS_GEOIMPORT_PATH not work? Using this variable, I tried to determine where my shapefiles and my .impx can be found, but this setting has no effect. I still have to navigate from some strange directory to my files. The forum answer was, that another variable defines the import directory: MS_GEOPROJHOME. I found that this is true, but changing this variable seems to be confusing for the system: my database is not opened automatically (like it was before). I have to undo the change, then my project is loaded correctly again.
Generally, I don't understand why there is a variable with a name sounding like exactly what I want, but it doesn't work. And there is really not much to be found in the Bentley Map documentation.
Any ideas? Thank you very much.

This variable is definitely not working as expected. For now, the default path for Import File seems to be defined by MS_GEOPROJHOME. It should not. This has been reported to internal instance of Bentley Map.
