Bentley Map CONNECT Edition Technology Preview?

I haven't seen any mention of this on the forum, so I'll ask...

Will there be a Bentley Map Technology Preview (or Beta) for the CONNECT Edition similar to what we had for MicroStation CONNECT and Bentley Map SS4?

If so, when is that expected to happen?

In working with MicroStation CONNECT workspaces and the changes to the user configuration level I would imagine that this will require a substantial change in how Bentley Map workspaces are set up. I would also like to start planning for any XFM feature migration required from Map SS4 to Map CONNECT.

Thanks.

  • Thank you for asking. We are currently in the process of finalizing our plans for 2017. Please stay tuned...

    This is a test

when can we expect Bentley Map CONNECT to be published?

we all know Bentley (but many other software developers as well ;-) never promise specific release date ;-)

    I couldn't find anything

I remember Bentley Map CONNECT Edition was mentioned as "demonstrated product" in some press release from Shanghai conference. So my assumption is that some development version exists internally, also because other Bentley product depend on Bentley Map engine or functionality.

and depending on release date we'd like to migrate to ProjectWise / Microstation / Map CONNECT and Oracle 12c.

This is common problem, I have several such customers (even less complex, but waiting to migrate everything not separateley e.g. MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer). But even when BM will be released, I guess it will take several month to stabilize it (every first version is just public beta ;-) a also to test all used BM tools are there and operational.

  • Sorry for the delay in responding.

Bentley Map CONNECT is under development and is expected to be released at the end of February, 2018.

The first product released will be Bentley Map.  This was previously known as Bentley Map Standalone but since layered versions of the CONNECT products are not being developed, it is simply Bentley Map.

As mentioned, it will be a CONNECT Edition product, meaning a 64 bit application (very good for large data sets and reality models), new ribbon interface, access to the Bentley Cloud Services and other CONNECT related features.

To start, the most often used capabilities will be available in Bentley Map CONNECT.  Missing from this first release will be things like:

    • Print Preparation
    • Topology features (cleanup, buffer, overlay etc.)
    • Publish i-models
    • FME Interface
    • Grid Generation Tools
    • RDBMS editing
    • Map Finishing
    • The SDK
    • Others

Our intent is to provide the functionality used by the vast majority of our users in the first release and provide updates quarterly thereafter.

Bentley Map Enterprise and Bentley Map PowerView are expected to follow by Q2 2018.

We are very excited about making Bentley Map available to our CONNECT users.  We expect the improved performance with large data sets and new streamlined interface will be particularly appealing and as always, look forward to your feedback.

  • Thank you for the update Keith.

Now that the planned release is relatively close at hand, can you give us some more specific insights on changes in this release?

What is happening with the Geospatial Administrator (GSA)?

    • The current version creates special configurations at the User level for different Map workspaces. In CONNECT users cannot change the User configuration. Will the new/updated  GSA create CONNECT WorkSets?

    • Will there be a way to automatically upgrade V8i GSA user workspaces to the CONNECT Edition?

    • Is the GSA being replaced with something completely different?

Will XFM features be useable/upgradeable in CONNECT?

    • It is my understanding that the XFM data structure has been deprecated by Bentley. Presumably the CONNECT Edition feature attributes will be stored using EC Schemas.

    • Will we be able to use legacy V8i XFM features in the CONNECT Edition?

    • Will there be a feature migration/upgrade tool available?

    Thanks.

  • Bentley Map CONNECT is essentially the existing Bentley Map functionality upgraded to the CONNECT edition capabilities.

It does adopt the various MicroStation enhancements such as reality model classifiers, ribbon interface and so on.

The GSA remains unchanged but it does adapt to the new workset capability.  It reads the existing schema and exports a new workspace that uses the new MicroStation setup.  There should be no changes required beyond any variable changes that may have been made.

XFM features remain the same and are not being deprecated.  No data migration tools are required as all remains the same.

Perhaps the biggest effort in adopting Bentley Map CONNECT will be in upgrading custom applications.  At a minimum they will need to be recompiled.  We expect to provide documentation on any changes made to the Map API (which are very minimal) but there may be changes required for MicroStation level APIs and those are well documented by the MicroStation team.

    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you Keith. It appears as if the migration to Bentley Map will be much easier than anticipated. I look forward to trying it out.
