Buffer Tool option regarding buffered elements

In Map Manager, when you create a buffer around a feature, the resultant buffer is stored as a new layer, by default. If you want to merge or create an union of buffer layer with those features that it is overlapping, then you can achieve that with Overlay functionality.

Now, suppose you have a linear feature say Roads. So, you create a buffer of around 50m around it.

You have another point feature say Schools or Hospitals or Stores, etc. Your next step is to find out how many schools or hospitals are lying within 50m of the Road. So, you will use the buffer layer (created around Road feature) and use the Overlay tool. Select the required feature on the left side of the dialog and move it to right. Based on what type of overlay you need, you select the operation and click OK. You should get your results.

I'm not sure how can we control the buffered features through the process you explained in your response. I failing to see here, how overlay can be used to control the buffered area as per our requirements.

We cannot control the buffered features, we can only control the width of the buffer around a feature. So, as per your requirement, specify the width of the buffer area. Once the buffer area of required width is created, use that layer and any other feature to perform an overlay.

What we wanted was the options, to either merge/union or keep separate the buffer output. It looks like the options is not there.

Kiran, it can be done. Maybe I will explain in a bit detail.

1) Say, you have a feature Road. You have to create a buffer of 50m around it. So, you will create a new buffer layer, say Road_Buffer. It will be displayed in Map Manager as a new layer.
2) Now, you have another feature, called Schools. So, your aim is to find out how many schools are occurring within 50m of the Road feature.
3) For this, we can make use of Overlay tool. Use the layers, Road_Buffer and Schools layer and perform Inside operation. You will get another layer in Map Manager.

If you want to create an overlay of different polygon features, even that is possible.

Now, when you say want to keep separate the buffer output, can you please clarify?

Here, the colored lots , on the right and left side of the image are actually buffers created around two lots using Map Manager in Bentley Map. Now our requirement is, to control this buffer output, so can we merge the these buffered polygons (of-course if they are physically adjacent), or can we keep them separate or can we union them. We want to control this feature of the buffer.

So, from the above image and your explanation, I assume that you want to do a bit of overlay between such buffers. For that, you will have to create 2 buffer layers. One for the lot on the right and another lot on the left. We name them, right_lot_buffer and left_lot_buffer. Now, with these two, you can definitely perform any overlay operation that you want.
