Map - Promoting Shapes Made in Microstation - Problem with Arcs and Grouped Holes

Is there a means to eliminate arcs and grouped holes from shapes created in Microstation when they are promoted to features in Map?

Here is the whole process we use, so maybe we can find the best means to alter this process:

We create shapes in Microstation using the Create Region command.  Because we cannot control the source of the original data, the resulting shapes include arcs and grouped holes.

These microstation elements are referenced into a Map Model and Promoted into map features.  When these features are then used in various overlay processes, the arcs and grouped holes cause errors in the data.

What is the most efficient means to convert the arc edges of the shapes into faceted lines, and to split the shapes at any internal shapes so they are not grouped holes?

  • I don't see how the drop tool is an efficient method to remove arcs and grouped holes from polygons.  Let me explain more, and perhaps you can tweak my method...

Let's say there are 5,000 polygons in the microstation file, some of which are grouped holes, some of which are compound shapes built from lines and arcs, and some are compound shapes built from lines.

Let's say 1,000 of these polygons are grouped holes.  We could use the Drop Tool to mass drop all 1,000 grouped holes.  This would cause the interior holes to be lost from the exterior polygons.  This is an unwanted loss of data, so the polygons must be further dropped, a dividing line must be drawn through the exterior and interior polygons, and the create region command must be used to create two separate side-by-side polygons where there was formerly a grouped hole.  (Like cutting a doughnut in half).  Doing this polygon-repair 1,000 times is inefficient.  Is there a more direct way to divide up a grouped hole along a line, (cut the doughnut in half), so that it results in multiple shapes instead of a grouped hole?

Let's say 2,000 of these polygons are compound shapes which are partly built from arcs.  Using the element selection tool, these cannot be distinguished from the 2,000 other compound shapes which are not built from arcs.  So we would have to select 4,000 compound shapes and drop them.  At this point we could use the facet curve tool to mass-eliminate all arcs.  But then I have to rebuild 4,000 polygons.  Is there a more direct way to facet an arc that is part of a compound shape, without dropping?
