Activate Map causes MicroStation crash - Geopak Suite 08.11.09.872

I am currently getting a MicroStation crash issue when trying to active Map.

I have MicroStation 08.11.09.832 and Geopak Suite 08.11.09.872 installed on Win 10 machine.  The .dgn file I am using is blank, no entities, no references, a brand new file.  I am also using the delivered workspace - not a custom workspace.

Any help will be appreciated.

  • This type of error sometimes occurs when there is a conflict in the installation path for Bentley Map, or MicroStation dependency. Do you also have Map installed separately? If so, watch for the Map version # on the splash-screen that displays during initialization (08.11.09.713 is delivered with that version of GEOPAK). If it doesn't match this version, then that is the problem.

  • I am still lost on why the crashing is constantly happening when trying to activate map. I have looked at all the configs and workspace variables and do not see where there could be an issue with the install path. I realize Geopak and MicroStation are certified on Windows 10 but is Bentley Map?
  • When you upgraded MicroStation and GeoPAK did you upgrade the existing releases of MicroStation and GeoPAK or did you uninstall GeoPAK and MicroStation, clean up the folders where MicroStation and GeoPak were installed and then install MicroStation and GeoPAK?

  • Sean,

We successfully tested your scenario using Bentley Map on several versions of Windows, including Windows 10. Please file a New Service Request and we'll get someone to take a look at your specific situation. https://connect.bentley.com/

  • The upgrade process on my personal computer was, 1. Remove Geopak Suite 08.11.09.845, 2. Remove MicroStation 08.11.09.714, 3. Install MicroStation 08.11.09.832, 4. Install Geopak Suite 08.11.09.872. I did not remove the remaining files or folders after uninstall was complete.
Are you recommending that the remaining MicroStation and Geopak files\folders be removed after an uninstall? If so, why is this not listed in the read me file that comes with the install files? If you are recommending that the remaining files be removed that would be a hard sell because if a user has other Bentley software installed that integrates with MicroStation then the user is basically breaking the other Bentley software. To properly cleanup the remaining files\folders a user would need to remove all Bentley software, cleanup, and then install all Bentley software that was removed. Not going to happen in the production world. If a cleanup of the remaining files\folders is recommended then it should be included in the uninstall process.
As a side note I have a test computer that has a fresh install of Win 10 Enterprise with all current updates, I installed MicroStation 08.11.09.714 and Geopak Suite 08.11.09.872 and the crash happens all the time I try to activate Map.

I edited this post as the organization I work for decided to use Win 10 Enterprise and not Win 10 Enterprise N.  The N version removes all media content from Win 10.

  • Hi Sean,

Have you installed Geopak Suite and Microstation as Administrator ?

Also kindly run a repair on Geopak Suite and Microstation.

    1. Click "Programs and Features"
    2. Click on the MicroStation and Geopak program that is to be repaired, and then click "Modify".
    3. Click on Repair > Next.

  • Based upon my research on the communities I did run a repair and restart but that did not fix the issue. At the organization I work for, each employee is an administrator to the computer they use.

Since we are communicating on an ST that I filed and here I would prefer to not reply to both. I will respond to the ST and then post the solution here.
  • I worked with Dan Weston on this issue after filling an ST. Dan and I figured out that it was related to a rights issue. All users at the organization I work for are "Administrators" to their individual computers in Win 10 Enterprise environment but in this case I had to run Geopak Suite application as an Administrator (right click on the icon and select "Run as Administrator"). I ran the application as Administrator one time and then all other times ran as normal without crashing.

UAC (User access control) in Win 10 Enterprise environment is crazy!

Thanks to Dan for spending the time to figure the issue out. I appreciate it!
