COORDINATE TRANSFORM TOOLS

Just wondering where the transform all as fence, fence transform, element transform tools are located in Bentley Map V8i?

I can only see warp and ASCII transform tools!

Guide me please!

  • From the Bentley Map v8i help file.

    Transforming Elements
In Bentley Map, various options were available for transforming geometry. In Bentley Map V8i, these capabilities are now provided by MicroStation. There are two ways to transform DGN files. Both of these methods can be done in plain MicroStation without Bentley Map loaded. If Bentley Map is loaded, please see Bentley Map Operation with RDBMS.

Assigning a new Geographic Coordinate System (GCS )
Use the MicroStation tools to assign a new GCS. Upon selecting the new GCS and assigning to a file, you will be prompted to reproject the data into the new coordinate system. Of course, this presumes that the original DGN file had a coordinate system defined already.

Fence Copy into a new DGN
Create a new DGN and assign the GCS of the new projection. Reference the file that you wish to copy into this new projection. Make sure you use the Geographic-reprojected option as below.

Use the fence copy tools to copy the required data into the active file. It will be copied in manner in which it was reprojected.

  • To Jerry's useful remarks I would like to add that V8i takes a new approach to handling coordinate systems.

As you might have noticed, the foundation of the coordinate system handling is now on the MicroStation level. Because of this, many of the coordinate system tools found in Bentley Map (and MicroStation GeoGraphics before that) are now redundant.

My advice would be to first see if the new coordinate system handling on the MicroStation level covers your needs (e.g. use the remarks Jerry copied into his reply).

The new approach might be somewhat different, but is believed to get the job done in most of the cases.

If the new approach does not cover specific needs you might have, let us know.

    Cheers,

    Gijsbert

  • Hi, I have a question about Bentley Map V8i SELECTseries2 capabilities in coordination system transformations - form Series2 Bentley Map now comes in two flawours - Standalone and for MicroStation. In this thread it was said, that coordinate system transformations, since introducing Bentley Map V8i, are made at MicroStation level. Now, what happens with Series2 Standalone version - is it capable to do transformations and, particularly, transforming from undefined (local, plain) coordinate system (say 1000x1000 at SW corner) to global coordinate system with standard datum and projection (usually it causes warp of the geometry and moving to global coordinates, such as Northign (geodetic Y)=6.123.456 Easting (geodetic X)=500.234) ?

  • Hi. As far as I know the StandAlone version of Map should contain the same coordinate system support as what is in Microstation when running Bentley Map for Microstation.
