Map mobile raster images

I'm very new to Map. I work in survey. We are trying to implement Map mobile as field tool. Here is my issue:

1. When I publish my i model my export preferences are as shown below:

2. export to my CONNECTED personal share.

3. Open mobile map on Ipad.

I have dgn graphics but no levels or raster images display. What am I doing wrong?

  • Spoke to Dan. Found out I didn't have the correct software installed. Here is what I did so far:

    1. Installed Map 08.11.09.805

    2. Installed Map Mobile publisher (freeware)

    3. Opened my project dgn file in Map.

    4. Referenced my raster images into said file.

    5. Publish for map mobile (totally different tool and dialog box this time) Here is the dialog box and settings.....see below:

    6. Hit the publish button......

It hangs up for a long time at the 94% mark. I let it run and went home....

The next morning here is what I found. The log error contains more than 5000 errors! (I attached it) This dgn file only contains several hundred items.

    export log issues_orig.log

What is going on? Is it the raster images?

I have attached the dgn file (no raster images) to this post. Please open and take a look. Can I post the raster images as well? I have a gut feeling this is where the problem is at.

  • Thank you for posting the DGN File Cliff, I'll take a look.

The last 26 entries in the .log file indicate a problem with the STORM LABELS. The "Failed to read ECInstance..." issue may be that you have to 'embed' or attach the Mr. SID file directly to the DGN, rather than attached as a Reference. Give that a try, and I'll do the same to see if it makes a difference.

One way to troubleshoot issues like these is to disable items in the Feature list until you find the one that is causing the problem.

  • Dan,

Here is a summary of what I have done so far:

    1. I deleted the model STORM LABELS from the dgn file in question.

    2. toggled OFF the raster images from the features export tool dialog.

Exports an I-model very quickly. Still has many errors in the log file.

    Next...

    1. Toggled ON the raster attachments.

I-model export chokes at the 94% mark.

Seems safe to say the images are the issue.

I don't think the SID files are embedded in the dgn. How do I check that?

  • I have converted the 12 raster attachments to iTiff format. This appears to have sped up the process. Still has 550 errors in the log file.
  • Just following up in real time.

Seems like the conversion is working now. My data in Mobile Map now has levels and an aerial background. Progress!

I also clipped the iTiff files. The file size is around 94 meg. Is that considered to large?

  • Cliff,

It is good to hear that you've made progress. When creating i-models that contain raster data, a 94mb file size is not unexpected. In fact, depending on the amount of raster and the selected raster image downsampling applied, the i-model could in fact be much larger. Please see the "Bentley Map Mobile Publisher FAQ" page for information on the MS_RASTER_DOWNSAMPLING_PREFSIZE_FORIMODEL configuration variable that can be used to adjust the raster image resolution.

We've designed Bentley Map Mobile to perform efficiently with multiple gigabyte i-models, containing either 10s of millions vector elements, or high resolution raster data. We have customers using Bentley Map Mobile in production with i-models containing 20+ million features/elements performing efficiently on devices such as Apple iPad minis.

    Regards,

    Jeff Bielefeld [Bentley]

  • Jeff,
Thanks for the follow up. It does help to know what others are experiencing with Map mobile. The learning curve for the field crews seems pretty short overall. Now I need to learn Map!

I'll look into the config variable for raster reduction.

    Cliff
