Bentley Map RTK data collection

I'm a surveyor who is very new to the GIS world. We are using Mobile Map to QC storm structure data. This is working great.

Is there a Bentley application that can be used for field collection using RTK gps?  We would like to collect a large amount of storm drainage data using RTK and provide an ESRI database as a deliverable.

Is that possible?

  • Cliff,

    Yes, this should be possible using capabilities provided in the Bentley Map product line as outlined here. We've other survey companies using Bentley Map to collect survey data and produce various forms of deliverables. Specifics on the RTK GPS system being used may influence recommended capture methods. I would suggest starting a conversation with your Bentley account manager to learn more about potential solutions.

  • I will contact our internal Bentley person. We have ELS plan with Bentley so this should be something we can accomplish. We are currently using Trimble hardware to collect survey data.
  • The survey tools included with OpenRoads, GEOPAK, Map and Map Enterprise, will consume the GPS data from the Trimble devices. Use Map or Map Enterprise to create and provide the ESRI database deliverable; in Shapefile or File Geodatabase format.

  • Yes I'm very familiar with the Geopak tools. We use the survey tools all day everyday! I just need to learn a few specific work flows in Map. I have a Bentley Learn account....time to burn the midnight oil.
  • Cliff,

    I don't know if my answer will be of any help to you.

    We are a large danish surveyor company using Trimble survey equipment and Bentley Map as our standard Cad/Gis platform.
    We don't use Bentleys Survey Tool, because we started the Trimble / Bentley Map usage long before Survey tools was added to Bentley map.
    As I see it you have two or more hurdles to overcome;
    Trimble Access data controller software has a nice way to collect attributes ( = Properties in Bentley map) along with the surveying. As far as I remember these attributes are not included in the Civil-features that Survey tools creates --may be that is not correct any more!
    Second Survey tools create Civil-features and not XFM-features which Bentley map works with. Maybe the Gis Export tools will export these features as well -again I have not tried that, since we use our own software creating XFM features.
    If not, you will have to promote your Civil-features to XFM features, and I believe, that if you have attributes/properties you have to reenter them.
    Hopefully my knowledge is outdated or wrong :-)
