Map Mobile crash...data loss

A field crew has experienced a Map Mobile crash (IOS). They were making redlines when this happened. Three questions come to mind:

1. Is there a backup system?

2. Where does the backup data reside?

3. Is the upload to server function going to backup redline data? I dont care about the i-model. We can bring that back with no issue.

Thoughts or suggestions?

  • Cliff,

The redline data collected in Bentley Map Mobile is stored separately on the device in a .markupdb file. On iOS the .markupdb file is accessible in the Bentley Map Mobile documents folder using iTunes. Uploading one or more selected redline layers to the server would in fact make copies of the .markupdb file.

Was data lost during the crash? Are you able to provide steps that would reproduce the crash?

  • Jeff - Just had another data loss incident. Here is description from the folks in the field:

    1. Crew made markups in a new redline. (my workflow thus far is to have them create a new redline each day)
    2. Crew finished the area they were working in. Hit the home button.
    3. Crew drives up the road, gets out of the truck, hits the home button...opens Map app.
    4. The redline they were working in is empty. No markups.

Now the crew is uploading the .markupdb file to the CONNECTION server after every redline work effort (time between uploads is approximately 10 minutes).

These guys are getting gun shy. Nobody likes to re-do work. Anyone else having stability or save issues?

  • Cliff,

Based upon your earlier reports, we reviewed possible scenarios in which new redline data would not be saved to the .markupdb file. We confirmed that use of the back arrow...

...located in the upper left is currently required to exit redline mode and save new data. Because of this we have made enhancements in the upcoming Bentley Map Mobile release to automatically save the redline data as it is being created, eliminating potential data loss while preserving the Undo/Redo capabilities.

We are working to have that Bentley Map Mobile update available in app stores later this month. Until then, I would advise your users to always use the back arrow to exit redline mode to ensure the data has been saved to the .markupdb file.
