Aerial Photo with Bentley Map Mobile

Hello,

I recently discovered Bentley Map Mobile and for field use there is no equal save for the lack of an Aerial Image. Without an aerial image, it is more useful to simply use Google Earth. Is there anyway to get gigabyte size aerial images exported so the resultant imodel is not huge? Is there anyway aerial images can be downloaded on the fly similar to Google Earth? I have tried to convert a simple aerial photograph that is 5MB in size and the imodel is over 100MB before I stopped its creation.

Any help is greatly appreciated. If this isn't a capability now, will it be in the future? Without the use of an aerial image the software is not very useful.

Thanks!

  • Greetings Paul,

At this time, there is no alternative other than allow Bentley Map Mobile Publisher to package the raster reference file attachments into the Bentley Map Mobile .imodel file. As you may know, you can use the MS_RASTER_DOWNSAMPLING_PREFSIZE_FORIMODEL environment variable as described on the "Bentley Map Mobile Publisher - FAQ" page to affect the image resolution and overall file size.

In a future Bentley Map Mobile release, we will be providing the ability to use actual image files loaded directly onto the mobile device w/o the need to package inside the .imodel file. We are also considering the support for various map streaming services for connected operation.

  • Thanks very much Jeff for the quick reply!

Any idea when the future Bentley Map Mobile release will be that will integrate these features? Also using the above procedure you've noted is there a rule of thumb such as "if aerial photo is 5MB, resultant imodel file will be ?MB" ? Putting in my two cents, it seems the best map streaming feature would be Google Maps, however I suspect this would be difficult to negotiate as this would be a direct competitor to Google Earth.

    Thanks again!
  • Paul,

For the next major Bentley Map Mobile release, we are working towards having a Technology Preview release early next year.

There really is no direct computation for determining the eventual .imodel file size based on the raster file size. I can say that Bentley Map Mobile can handle files that are multiple gigabytes in size, containing high resolution raster or 10s of millions of features.
