State Plane Coordinate System 2022

What efforts can we expect from Bentley in preparation for datum SPCS2022?  Training, blogs, conversion information and services?

From the looks of it, this will be a massive effort, especially if existing files input Survey Feet values to a DGN file with International Foot working units (i.e. 1,000,000 survey feet input as 1,000,000 international feet).

  • We first need the definition of the SPCS2022 hopefully with the grid shift files from some version of NAD83 (Hopefully NSRS2011). Once this is available as well as all State Plane definitions we will be glad to add them to our dictionary of pre-defined Geographic Coordinate Systems. Likely the detailed information will be available from the USGS or whatever government instance that will provide the conversion data.

Concerning unit transformation the conversion of the units between two different geographic coordinate systems is already available and so is the conversion to the storage units/working units of design files on input output. These should not represent any problem.

  • Has there been any movement on this? In the versions of ORD I've run so far (up to 10.10.01.03), the NAD83 datum information is still only in Survey Feet.  We have several projects upcoming that will extend well past the Survey Foot senescence, and we'd like to get them moving toward the new datum.

  • Thanks for asking Joseph.  We'll get with the Development team to see where this stands and let you know.

  • Most State Plane coordinate systems are already offered using meters. For some states the passage to International Foot was performed a few years ago. For the other states version of the State Plane coordinate system will be eventually offered based on the international foot. This being said the units as defined in the Geographic Coordinate system have little impact upon operations in Power Products and MicroStation. For any input and output as well as coordinate value storage the units used are the Working Units and the Storage Units. The units of the GCS have little to no impact since v8i other than to be consistent with the Working Units but that is not mandatory.

As for the initial subject of the topic concerning the geodetic datum SPCS2022, to my knowledge it is still expected to be published somewhere in 2023. Once the definition is published we will start working on its support.
