I am posting here as I understand this might be the right place for this query.
I am looking for terrain data - preferably in 5m contours - for a large area of western Europe: a diagonal strip from north of London to south of Rome. I realise that this is a very large area spanning several countries (and therefore mapping organisations).
The key point is that I only need this at 1:1,000,000 scale, so it can afford to be relatively low accuracy/detail. I realise that this might be an unusual request from mapping information!
I'd love to figure out a way to source the right digital data... but I am also open to the possibility of finding paper maps, scanning them and doing a vector line trace in Microstation (as I did a few times in decades past!). The purpose of this is to CNC cut a 3D terrain model representing a historic walking trail. It will end up being around 3m long by 600mm wide.
So... does anyone have any suggestions for how or where I might find such information? All ideas are very welcome. I am asking this here as I expect there may be quite a few highly experienced infrastructure professionals who read these forums. My hope is that one of you might be able to help.
Many thanks.
Chris
I found this Download page interesting, it may help in your search for data: srtm.csi.cgiar.org/.../
The data is Raster (GeoTIFF) format, but you could generate contours from them using the Descartes product..
