why can't re-projected rasters be clipped?

I would like to be able to put clip boundaries on raster images that are re-projected, but it gives an error saying it can't because they are re-projected.  Is there anyway to do this and if not why?

  • It is not possible to clip reprojected rasters, but it is possible to reproject clipped rasters. So, the workaround is to check "Inherit GeoCS from Model" in the Raster Manager dialog box, clip the raster and set the "Inherit GeoCS from Model" toggle back OFF.

  • That is really not a good solution in my case because the raster needs to be re-projected to fit my data so that I know where I need to clip it, otherwise it is just out in space with no relation to my project.  One example is the use of WMS raster attachments from terraserver, if I attach these by inheriting the dgn coordinate system they will not come into the correct position.

I really think this option needs to be a change request as it would be extremely helpfull.

  • Ray,

The workaround we tell our clients is to attach the reprojected raster to an empty model or dgn file with the proper coordinate system configured. Then use the regular Reference attachment tools to attach the raster model/file to the desired model. You can use the coincident or coincident world settings since they are both in the same geographic coordinate system. Make sure the display raster toggle is on. After the reference is attached you can use the reference clip tools to clip the raster.

  • I also have been having issues with this.  I'm glad I stumbled across this thread; at least now I know I'm not crazy.

I think the issue for me is that all of our imagery is stored in the Michigan GeoRef coordinate system, but I need to use it in State Plane.  Every WMS image set that I try gives me the same error, about the raster file being reprojected.  It doesn't actually state in the error message that this is the reason it won't clip, but I presume that to be the case.  When I tried Pascal Cloutier's workaround above, I was informed that the fence I placed on the raster image did not overlap the selected image.  (This despite the fact that I could clearly see it on the screen, and I only had one raster dataset attached, which was properly selected.)  I guess I'll try Rod's workaround next, but my main point is that this is a ridiculous situation.  I can't possibly show our users how to do this; it's much too complex.  It should be as simple as clipping any other raster image.

I agree with mriley above, this is frustrating.  It's not a feature we're requesting, it's basic functionality which is lacking in one specific situation - some would call that a bug.

Bentley, you need to fix this!
