The new split and merge feature is designed for polygons. You'll be able to split them, merge them and define some rules to set their attributes when these operations are performed. But so far, this tool is for polygons only.
Besides the suggestions from Mat and Bill, Bentley Cadastre is used for property and parcel management, if that is what you are wanting the split and merge for.

Bill McG:In addition to the polygon split/merge capability Mathieu describes, Map also has a tool that merges linework for you: Tools->GeoSpatial->Topology Cleanup Then checkout the "Connect Linework" tool. Place a fence around the subject linework, select the command, and accept the fence. HTH
