how are Projection distortions handled when using UTM-Projection-GCS and Measuring command

As we know (surveyors for sure) the UTM-projection is coming with a scale of 0.9996 at the meridian and with projection distortions to the east and west

beginning from the meridian.

This scale is going up to 1.000 and above at 180km(180000m) from the meridian to east or west and it is non linear.

correction formulas are available from surveying publications world wide!

So projected date do not give us real world measurements when using simple CAD distance- and area commands.

Does Bentley Map or Microstation V8i Measure commands take care of the projection distorsions when a UTM GCS is attached

to a dgn modell?

  • Frank,

MicroStation doe not provide compensation for the Transverse Mercator (or any other projections) local scale factor. MicroStation measures plain distances in the projected Cartesian space.

To measure distances along the ellipsoid, Bentley Map provides a tool for such purpose. The tool is called "Geodesic Line (Great Circle)" accessible through Tools/Gepospatial/CoordinateUtilities toolbar.

Note that the distance is measured along the ellipsoid, not the Geoid so, of course, the accuracy of distances (relative to real world measurements) calculated depends on the local geoid separation from the ellipsoid.
