...are you using a MicroStation database connection? If you enter db=? at the uStn> prompt, do you see the name of your database connection? The Visual Query Builder only supports database connections made through standard MicroStation database functionality. If you are connecting to your database using the "Interoperability" application, then you would need to use the "Search..." tool which can be run by right-clicking on a feature class in the "Interoperability" application and selecting "Search..." command. To search feature instances in your session, you can by right-click on a map layer in the "Map Manager" application and select the "Search..." command. You can also enter "map query search" at the uStn> prompt to search the session as well.
