Height data models with *.asc extensions.

Hi everyone.

Can someone help!

First of all, I am a bit new to working with terrain/height data models.

I have been asked to create a model of a highway (which is at quite a gradient, so needs height data) showing various options for pavements/sidewalks, barriers etc.

I have 2m height data in the form of *.asc files. I am unfamiliar with this format. Is it possible to import these files into V8i? The vendor states they can be used with AutoCAD - I assume that there is a Bentley progam that can do the same?

I don't necessarily need to edit the file, but want to use it as a reference.

I am a Select subscriber - Is there an application (such as Bentley Map) that I could download and use.

Thanks

John Elliott

  • Hi John,

have you tried ot open the file with an ASCII editor (Notepad or Notepad++)? The data may just be XYZ data. If it is, any of the Bentley Civil products will be able to import the data and create a DTM from it.

    IHow large are these files?

f you like, you could post one of the files here (or send it to me directly) and I'd be happy to take a look and see what I can work out.

Might be best to ZIP the file/s first.

  • Thanks Micheal, you're a star!

I take it from the time of your reply that you are in the UK. I will try and forward a file to you (they're @ 2 Megs) but I'm a bit under the cosh at a client's at the moment.

I'll try to do as you instruct this evening, or send one over when I get a moment.

    Regards

  • Bentley InRoads software supports the.Arc/INFO ASCII Grid files (.asc).    So does the FME Extension to Bentley Map, through the Safe Software ESRI ASCII Grid Reader/Writer.

  • Hi John,

This .asc extension is usually used for Arc/INFO ASCII Grid files as djweston pointed out.

This file format is usually read as a DEM raster. Many new DEM raster in SELECTSeries 1 are not supported by Data Acquisition, a module delivered with the Civil products. Unfortunately Arc/INFO ASCII Grid is not one of them.

This file format has been added to the listed of supported DEM raster file in our core raster library and some while ago some product development manager asks me about how to support this.

Probably Michael could give you more information about the status of the Arc/INFO ASCII Grid files in the next SELECTSeries release of Civil product.

Bentley Descartes will be able to support this file format in its next SELECTSeries release, but only for 2D thematic visualization.
