I have set up a user defined coordinate system that is only valid for a smalle area ( the Island of Fehmarn in Germany). In this I have set up min and max values of longitude and latitudes.
Are there any way I can set up Bentley Map and Microstation

Re: How to prevent users from reproject to/from a coordinate system when outside Min and Max Lat/Log

Alain,

Sorry for the delay in my answer, but I have been on vaccation. We will do another coordinate setup when SS3 is released in 2012.

We are quite sure that we will keep Fehmarn Belt definition out of the general MicroStation coordinate definition, since it has two different values, depending on wheter you work with designfiles based on german ETRS89 or designfiles based on danish ETRS89.

Just ask Keith :-)

You are right Erik. It is better once the SS3 is installed to (re-)create a user-defined datum and user-defined coordinate system (requires Bentley Map to create). These user-defined definitions will be stored in your user-defined dictionary. Afterwards when you upgrade subequent MicroStation versions, all you will have to is to set the reference to your self-contained user-defined dictionary file. Likewise this small user dictionary can be sent to any MicroStation user that needs these definitions.

For datums and coordinate systems that are general use or can be of interest to a lot of our users we may add these definitions directly in the MicroStation delivered system dictionary. If you feel the Fehmarnbelt GCS is of such interest contact me or Keith Raymond directly so it can be added. (it will not make it into SS3 Beta 2 however)

So we at BentleyUserDk will have to do a new setup of Danish coordinatesystems when BMap SS3 is released

Correct ?

User-defined GCS, user-defined datum and even user-defined ellipsoids will all be stored in the pertinent user-defined dictionary, making the file self contained and easier to distribute to DGN file users that need these definitions.

I also want to point out that there is garantee that a GCS dictionary modified with GeoGraphics will work correctly on MS SS3 (or even v8i, SS1 or SS2). Chances are it will work but be careful. MS SS3 User defined GCS dictionary will NOT be compatible with previous versions of MicroStation.

Re: How to prevent users from reproject to/from a coordinate system when outside Min and Max Lat/Log

As a note, this isn't a recommended workflow. In Microstation SS3 along with Bentley Map SS3 you will be able to define custom datums. I understand that in the meantime this workaround may be the only solution though...

As a german I'm interested how you have setup a user defined coordiante system in Map (SS2) when there is no datum editor anymore like in Map XM?

Re: How to prevent users from reproject to/from a coordinate system when outside Min and Max Lat/Log

Erik,

Unfortunately there is no such feature. The area defined in the geographic coordinate system definition is called the user-defined domain and is not enforced anywhere. It is only for information purposes only.

Internally , we do implement some sort of "mathematical domain" computations which calculates an area upon which reprojection is possible. The "mathematical domain" is automatically applied but only to rasters and to upcoming SS3 Scaleable Terrain Model only. For these two types of elements, the element is automatically clipped to an area upon which the reprojection is possible.

The intent was to allow displaying of world representing rasters such as Bing Maps and various WMS based layers which extend upon very large areas but needed to be used on projects limited in area and using a projection that could not be applied to the whole Earth.

This mathematical domain is computed only for a limited number of projection methods.

The application of a mathematical domain is unfortunately not so easy for vector and we will have to think further how such limitation can be performed in future versions.
