A label will be built following a rule that can use the properties of a feature. The rule will apply for all the features of a feature class. For example: "[Owner] : [Value]" can be used to display the owner of a parcel and it's value separed by a colon.
An annotation is unique to as feature, it's not defined by a general rule.
You can annotate a single building and write anything you want on it that is related to this particular occurence.

Thanks for the clarification!

Mathieu:

For example, you could write on a building: "This building will be destructed on May 15th".

That would be an abstract C++ building. A real building would be destroyed.

In addition to Mathieu's announcement that we will have a 'real' solution in Bentley Map for annotation/labeling at some point in the (near) future, a few remarks

It is not over-complicated to extend/enhance the XFM standard operation library annotation function to work on groups of features.

In a fairly limited amount of time, this would give you a simple annotation framework that would work rather quickly for point features (placement at an offset), polygon features (placement at the centroid).

Things are a bit more complicated for linear features (where to place, offset, parallel etc.) And then there are things to solve like polygons with holes, polygons with odd shapes (causing the centroid to be outside the polygon), multi features (place just one annotation or an annotation on each instance of the feature).

In addintion, there is the question of annotation versus labeling. In our geospatial world, we mainly use the idea of cartographic text and physically add an element to our data stores as an annotation. In the GIS world of many others a label is not a physical element in the data store, it is simply a way to visualize a query.

I am confident that we want to get these things right with our Annotation/Labeling functionality planned for Bentley Map. So if your annotation wishes are sophisticated, you unfortunately do not have a choice but to wait.

If your annotation wishes are fairly simple (but urgent), and you are capable/have time/are not afraid of a little customizing, let us know. We might be able to help you with an intermediate solution.

Cheers,

I am also very interested in finding a way to automatically annotate imported SHP data. If I create a schema containing a feature with corresponding properties to the features in the original SHP file and with an annotation sub feature that contains a valid property based annotation expression, I am only able to annotate the imported elements if I edit each feature manually. I have files that contain thousands of elements that I would like to annotate, preferably not one at a time. How can this be done automatically using embeded XFM properties, not an attached database?

I agree with Ian I have the same problem regarding annotation and the issue of the ability of joining tables and aoto legend generation that are not present in the XM edition.

Could these be address in the V8i ?

Hi All,

I am still stuck on this problem. I have an Oracle database and the latest Bentley Map V8i and still I can't find an option to automatically label the features from the Oracle Spatial database. Have I missed something?

I also found that Bentley Map V8i doesn't like the Oracle 10g Client (and you need to install the 11g Client) and also it doesn't like the 64-bit 11g Client. So for Bentley Map V8i you need to have the 32-bit Oracle 11g Client to use the 'Open Oracle Spatial' feature.

How do people work around this problem?

Cheers Ian

I have just set-up an Oracle server, to try another approach. But if you connect to the database using the 'Open Oracle Spatial', to get the geometries, the annotation dialog doesn't recognize this connection even though it is an RDBMS data-set.
