Hi,
I am investigating Bentley Map, but I have come across a problem with Annotation or Labeling. I have experience using ESRI and MapInfo products.
I would like to open a SHP / TAB file with Bentley Map and Label each element with attributes from the associated database. I can review these attribute, but how do you label with these attributes??
Cheers Ian
Mathieu: A label will be built following a rule that can use the properties of a feature. The rule will apply for all the features of a feature class. For example: "[Owner] : [Value]" can be used to display the owner of a parcel and it's value separed by a colon. An annotation is unique to as feature, it's not defined by a general rule. You can annotate a single building and write anything you want on it that is related to this particular occurence.
Thanks for the clarification!
Mathieu: For example, you could write on a building: "This building will be destructed on May 15th".
That would be an abstract C++ building. A real building would be destroyed. [Programmer's joke!]

Jon Summers: Mathieu: We are working on a labeling & annotation system. Can you clarify the meaning of your usage of the terms label and annotation. Many of us might think that they refer to the same concept. Here's what Dictionary.com has to say: Annotation: a critical or explanatory note or body of notes added to a text Label: a word or phrase indicating that what follows belongs in a particular category or classification Regards, Jon Summers LA Solutions

Your definitions are pretty accurate. In fact, a label will be built following a rule that can use the properties of a feature. The rule will apply for all the features of a feature class. For example: "[Owner] : [Value]" can be used to display the owner of a parcel and it's value separed by a colon.

...to confirm, new "Labeling" and "Annotation" functionalities will be included in the Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 1) release planned for Q3 2009 release.
