Parcels with self crossing boundaries

Hi,

working with Bentley Map we encountered some special cases in the topology of parcels, where the boundary of a parcel touches itself. This may occur in an edge or a node. From my experience, indeed, this is a challenge for the underlying topological model and you should consider if it is allowed to create these situations. But if it is allowed to the user, things should work ...

This happens in a cadastre wizard created project, all options answered by default.

Here is the description, what I'm doing in the video. If it is too small use strg + scroll the mouse:

First video:

- I'm using the latest version of Microstation and Bentley Map actually available from Bentley download.
- I create a parcel with an inner parcel.
- I "split" the outer parcel with one edge only.
- I move a node of this splitting edge.

Second video:

- I create a parcel and an surrounding parcel, which touches itself in a node.
- I move this node.

Third video:

- I create a parcel touching itself in a node.
- I create a parcel touching itself in an edge (digitizing an "8").

In the 1990s I worked a lot with Intergaphs Dynamo GIS. These cases were strictly rejected by the system, if the user tried to create these situations.

Regards,
Tom

  • I created the following three Trouble Reports for these issues:

TR# 348835 - [Cadastre] Data corruption results when a polygon boundary is edited, creating a self-crossing Edge.
TR# 358837 - [Cadastre] Data corruption results when a polygon boundary is edited, creating a self-crossing Node.
TR# 348838 - [Cadastre] Data corruption results when a polygon boundary is placed, creating a self-crossing Boundary.

They will be scheduled for release in the Bentley Map V8i (SELECTseries 4) release.
