Trying to Create a Shape File from an Inferred Feature Polygon

Using Bentley Map SS3 8.11.09.107

I've been creating shape files of our standard project with XFM features etc. and everything works fine. I then had a need to quickly create a shape file of a few standard Microstation elements which had been placed with the Microstation 'Place Shape' Command. The result is in addition to the standard shape files additional '*_collection' shp,dbf and shx files are created.

The problem is pretty easy to test:

1. Create a new blank DGN file with Bentley Map and use 'Place Shape' to draw a couple of shapes on the default level. NB. The standard MS_GEO Workspace was used to reduce other variations.

2. File > Export > GIS Data Types and use standard process to create a shape file called 'Test.shp'

3. Resultant file output is:

test.shp

test.dbf

test.shx

Default_Collection.shp

Default_Collection.dbf

Default_Collection.shx

4. If you review these output shape files, one will have the first polygon but nothing more. The second shape file will have the remaining shapes.

5. We just tested this on some other versions of Map and it wasn't happening in ....09.51 or .....09.76. It starts to be a problem around 09.91 and is a problem in ..09.107. Was this about the time Bentley went from XFM1 to XFM2 features?

Could someone from Bentley please confirm this problem and suggest a solution?

Thank you.

  • I can confirm that multiple file creation occurs when a Collection Feature Class is selected as the output in the Add Shapefile... option.

This has been reported and filed in Bentley Trouble Report 344195, which is scheduled to be fixed in a future release of Bentley Map.  Until that time, use the Add Shapefile directory... option to create the intended file.

  • Thank you very much Dan. That workaround will solve our problem for now.

Is there a fixes or major release due out before Christmas? I think I read somewhere that Geodatabase support will be included in the next release. Is there a summary somewhere of what we can expect in the next release?

    Cheers.
