Symbolizing GIS data

Hello all,

The reason for this thread is to try to understand the various ways choose and save symbols for known data types. In my situation, I receive several shapefiles of a standard schema. I'd like to apply symbology to these shapefiles to sometimes include subtypes if possible. So my question has two parts:

1) What is the best way to apply symbology to GIS data?

2) What is the best way to save those symbology choices to those known GIS data types to use as a standard?

Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Joel,

The 'best' way to apply symbology to GIS data using Bentley Map is to start with a geospatial schema defined with the Geospatial Administrator (GSA).  This provides Property-based symbology for each feature and sub-feature listed in the schema.  When you import a Shapefile the incoming feature can be 'mapped' to a feature name from the schema and be symbolized based on pre-defined styles and properties.  The import settings can be saved and reused by defining an import settings file (.impx) during the import process.  The Help file illustrates these commands under the Bentley Geospatial Administrator and Interoperability headings.
