Whenever a connection is made to a Spatial Database such as Oracle, the time the system takes to query and retrieve the requested features depends on several factors. The primary consideration is the number of features requested. There are filters that can limit or reduce the number and therefore time it takes to retrieve these features, such as the limits of a View, or a Fence that you have placed around an area. But the most significant factor is the number of features requested by the query; without a filter, the more features queried, the longer it will take to return the results.
For this reason, there is a built-in warning dialog box that displays when you select the Query button that says:
If there are a relatively small number of features in the Spatial table, or a View or Fence filter defined, then the results should be returned quickly. But if there are tens of thousands of features, hundreds of thousands, or more, then the system will take as long as it takes to return those to the Model. And because the ‘Undo’ button in MicroStation does not affect the results, they must either be used as-is, or erased and removed from the Model.
You can opt to not have the warning displayed subsequent times during this session by selecting the “Don’t’ show this message again” check-box. This dialog box is simply informing you that once you select OK, be prepared to use or remove the features that you have queried.
To prohibit the dialog from displaying altogether, use the GDI_SUPPRESS_QUERY_NON_UNDOABLE_WARNING variable. This can be defined in the GSA’s Macro’s section, or in your UCF file.
