hi,

Can Bentley Map XM connect to SDE type [ESRI] which is a propertitry of ESRI? like oracle spatial direct connection OR any tool/interface/gateway is used to connect to SDE type data.

thanks,

  • Due to various issues, you cannot connect directly to an ESRI SDE datasource in Bentley Map.

But, there is an ArcGIS Connector extension for Projectwise. The ArcGIS connector product uses at least 1 ArcEditor lincense for extracts and post between Arc SDE and the ArcGIS connector.

I suspect you already know that we can import/export Arc Shape files with Bentley Map ???

  • We are considering providing this capability based on user demand, so we would be interested in your requirements for this kind of functionality -- you can provide them here or send me a Private Message. In any case, thank you very much for your interest in Bentley Map.

  • this Projectwise Connector for ArcGIS will be coming under Bentley Map XM license or a separate license we need to take?

  • The ProjectWise Connector for ArcGIS is a separate product. Details are available here:

  • I'm diappointed about the situation with the lack of ArcSDE support directly from Bentley Map.

In MicroStation 2004 Edition with the GeoGraphics Extension this was possible, and it was said that the XM solution would support this without the demand of having ArcObjects installed. therefore you expect this was happening to the v8i version too.

As a user, you always expect improved functionality in the newer versions, especially when Bentley Map became a separate add-on to MicroStation.

This does not seem to be happening, and on top of  this i'm also experiencing problems about using the old GeoGraphics functions to annotate elements (which only works on XFM data),. Importing other GIS-formats is now only possible to XFM format, not to the database, which is unfortunately, because other tecnical applications cannot read the data from the design file.

I hope you can use some effort binging this product in a better shape, because the MicroStation platform in many other situations is very competetive and gives the users great value for the money. but the platform cannot live alone without a good functional integration to other platforms.

  • Hello Soren,

Apologies for the delay and thanks for the post.

MicroStation GeoGraphics 2004 edition supported directly referencing MXD files. This functionality required an ArcGIS license to be available. Although SDE was never directly supported, if an MXD file referenced an SDE data source then it could be viewed in MicroStation. In Bentley Map we implemented direct referencing of SHP files using technology that does not require an ESRI license.  However we are looking at reinstating the MXD reference capability for those users with access to ESRI licenses.

The annotation feature will be available in the upcoming SU1 release of Map due in September of this year. You can import GIS formats into the database however it does require a project with database features. The imported file can be mapped to those features so that the attributes get inserted into the database.  We are looking at making this process simpler, that is, be able to specify where the properties should be stored during import.

We certainly appreciate your input and are striving to add the features mentioned above and others in the upcoming releases.

    Regards, Keith Raymond
