Hello! We are affected by ArcGIS 10's inability to read v8i files, and wonder if the ProjectWise Connector for ArcGIS SDE circumvents this issue, or is ProjectWise Connector for ArcGIS also incompatible with v8i? Thank you!
It is possible to add a DGN file as a feature layer in ArcMap and it is fully integrated with ProjectWise when the Geo iDesktop to ArcMap is installed.
DGN files can be added to the ESRI MXD file using the Add Data tool from the Bentley ProjectWise Extension toolbar.
It is essentially the same command as the standard ArcMap Add Data, except that instead of browsing for data on local or network drives, users browse for data in the active ProjectWise datasource.
The supported data types are:
" ESRI Shapefiles
" ESRI Personal Geodatabases
" Some raster file formats (bil, bip, jpg, bmp, tif and sid)
" CAD files (dgn and dwg files)
" Layer files (lyr files)

The ArcGIS Connector is specifically designed to read/write ArcSDE data. This product works with ProjectWise and not standalone. See more information at :

I need to clarify my question: ArcMap does not read dgns created in v8i. A v8i dgn needs to be saved to v7 in order to open in ArcMap. This leads me to question: does the ProjectWise ArcGIS Connector, used w/ArcSDE somehow defeat this restriction, or is the ProjectWise ArcGIS Connector also restricted to v7 and standard v8 files?
The connector works with V8i files. It does not allow you to dump a v8i file, as is, into ArcSDE. It requires that these dumb graphics be converted to a ArcSDE compliant feature set instances and then posted to the spatial database. There are tools in Bentley Map that allow you to convert singular, or groups of graphics to feature set instances. This does require up front configuration of the feature sets.
I read V8i DGN files in ArcMap all the time. You may want to check your DGN files and compress them. IF they are not compressed ArcMap sometimes has a hard time handling them. Sometimes you have to go as far as Fence Filing the DGN file to a new V8i DGN file. But I have not had any issues wtih ArcMap 10 reading DGNs.
