Using PLAXIS 2D, it is possible to simulate the construction process of tunnels with a sprayed concrete lining (NATM) and account for the three-dimensional arching effect within the soil and the deformations around the unsupported tunnel face. The method that considers these effects is so-called the Convergence-Confinement method or β-method.

In this coffee corner, we will:

  • Introduce this method in PLAXIS 2D using two different approaches
  • Discuss their similarities and differences
  • Demonstrate the workflow in PLAXIS 2D using a NATM tunnelling example

Geotechnical Analysis Coffee Corners are open to all Bentley users, free of charge. One learning unit is applied to each participant’s Bentley Transcript for self-reporting. To view prior sessions, watch the Recordings On-Demand.
