Plastic Points

Dear all,

We are having troubles with the plastic points visualization. In one of our computers in the office they do not appear despite of they are indicated in the table. However in other of our computers, they are cleartly represented with red points. In both computers we have the same version v20.04.00.790.

Kind regards,

  • Dear Alexandra,

I will comment on the issue on the forum, too, apart from our communication via the support channels (Service Request).

The issue is related to the configuration applied to the graphics by the Windows Remote Desktop session. Typically for PLAXIS, the visualisation relies on OpenGL Version 3.3 (version released in 2010) and this can conflict with Windows Remote Desktop’s viewing experience.

This is a known issue for Windows Remote Desktop sessions and quite a few posts can be found online regarding this matter.

A first step that might help in some cases is to follow the steps below and configure the policy when using a Remote Desktop Session.

    1. Open the Edit Group Policy tool from Control Panel or use the Windows Search dialogue (Windows Key + R, then type in gpedit.msc)
    2. Browse to: Local Computer Policy\Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Remote Session Environment
    3. Then enable “Use the hardware default graphics adapter for all Remote Desktop Services sessions”

Doing this activates DirectX/OpenGL and the GPU during the remote desktop session, which allows PLAXIS to fully utilize all features available.

Another option is to follow NVIDIA's post that seems to tackle the problem for GeForce drivers R440 or later: DesignWorks | NVIDIA Developer

I hope that this clarifies the reason for the problem and provide a workaround for you.

Note that we implement PLAXIS applications to work best on physical computers so there might be cases in which issues arise with Windows Remote Desktop sessions.

It is always possible to perform the calculation on a powerful PC and move the PLAXIS project files to a local PC in which PLAXIS Output can be used. Make sure that any PLAXIS applications are closed on the Remote Desktop PC to avoid any potential usage logged.
Alternatively, use the PLAXIS Output Viewer on your local PC to view the results: https://communities.bentley.com/products/geotech-analysis/w/plaxis-soilvision-wiki/46024/plaxis-viewer---standalone-program-to-view-results
