I have this case "dynamic soil-structure interaction under earthquake " as illustrated in the figure below .
When I want to obtain the maximum lateral displacement of structure there is two option
1- find the maximum difference "gap" in the horizontal displacement of the top point of structure and the bottom point at foundation .
2- I used the relative displacement chart provided by PLAXIS , which is calculate the maximum absolute horizontal displacement of the top point at different periods . by getting the the natural period of the system we can find the relative displacement .
the point is ... there is different value between the two option above . which one is correct ?

In fact, they're both correct because they are two completely different plots that cannot be compared just like that. The left plot is a relative displacement RESPONSE SPECTRUM, hence it gives the expected relative displacement as function of the wave period (on the x-axis) whereas the right plot gives the actual relative displacement as a function of time during the earthquake.
