[PLAXIS Monopile Designer]: THICKNESS VARIATION for 3D model

Dear Sirs,

Please confirm if the THICKNESS VARIATION in Analysis Mode reflects correctly in the design verification 3D model.

I set the THICKNESS VARIATION as below. I think that this setting is reflected in the 1D model, but not in the 3D model.

I found the definition of plates in PLAXIS 3D. This is correct.

However, only the Plate_007 is used. Plate_0.05 and Plate_0.08 are not assigned.

I use PLAXIS Monopile Designer (21.01.00.479) and PLAXIS 3D Ultimate (21.01.00.479).

  • Dear Akira Nakashima,

Let me explain a bit detail of this as some others may also be interested it too.

It is possible to analyze a monopile with different thickness values along the pile in PLAXIS Monopile Designer, as defined in Analysis mode. A PLAXIS 3D design verification model can also be generated from this mode.

When the pile thickness of the generated PLAXIS 3D model is inspected in the Structures mode, it appears that a single value of pile thickness is assigned to the entire pile. This could wrongly indicate that the defined thickness variation is not being assigned to the pile segments.

However, the different pile thicknesses are correctly assigned to the pile segments in the Staged Construction mode. Thus, the right values are used in the calculation, and there is no problem with results.

We will work on improving the visualization of the monopile configuration in Structures mode in the future versions.
