Importing geometry form AutoCAD

Hi,

I accurately prepared the geometry in CAD and generated both PL and Regions. I tried to import the geometry and the import was successful. The problem is whenever I import the geometry Plaxis will detect a side of the model Fix, and another side free like a slope. I tried to manually change the boundary condition, but manual keys don't work properly and have no action on the model.

My geometry is complicated and is not easy to define by hand. It is an outcome of surveying.

I look forward to receiving any help.

Best regards,

  • Dear Pouyan,

From the information you shared it is difficult for me to understand what you are dealing with.

I can explain at least how the default boundary conditions are applied: PLAXIS has default fixities (for deformations) that are applied on the extremities of the model. That means that at Xmin, Xmax, Ymin, Ymax and Zmin you will get automatic fixities.

However, if your model is of irregular shape at the edges it can happen that PLAXIS recognizes the extremity to be different from what you can see (especially in a large model). If there is a difference of millimetres in the vertical boundary, PLAXIS will apply the fixities on that edge and not the rest of the model.

For those cases, sometimes it is useful to create a vertical surface manually, place it slightly inside your imported geometry and intersect them. You can safely delete the outsiders and be certain that your vertical model boundary is perfectly vertical.

For example, consider the case below where the Xmin boundary has a detail of millimetres that goes beyond the edges of the mode. By adding a vertical surface I am intersecting the volume with the vertical surface and afterwards removing the "bump". I can also delete the vertical surface as it is not needed anymore.
