Hi
Im undertaking an embankment design over soft soil, requiring piles and load transfer platform.
I have several geogrid layers and have activated them using the updated mesh option - they appear to be picking up tensile load, however the settlement remains very high between the columns such that there is a punching of the tip of piles through the load transfer platform. More design required, but i wonder if the updated mesh option is only required in a geogrid activation stage or must remain active throughout to capture 2nd order effects. I suspect the latter but looking to confirm.
Thanks
Scot
Dear Scot,
Yes, you need to have the Updated mesh option activated for the whole branch of calculation. This is also explained in the Practical considerations of the Updated mesh chapter in our reference manual.
I copy it here:
Changing from a 'normal' plastic calculation or consolidation analysis to an updated mesh analysis is only valid when displacements are reset to zero, because a series of updated mesh analyses must start from an undeformed geometry. Changing from an updated mesh calculation to a 'normal' plastic calculation or consolidation analysis is not valid, because then all large deformation effects will be disregarded, resulting in a large force unbalance.

Perfect, many thanks for the quick response.
Dear Stefano,
The issue seems to persist even after the updated mesh analysis is done. My analysis settlement is coming out to be more for geogrid reinforced soil.
