Poisson's Ratio For Gravity Loading

Hi all,

I have to define the soil with ko = 0.8. Since the soil layer is not horizontal I need to use gravity loading to generate stress at the start. horizontal stress can be generated using poisson's ratio (v) in gravity loading (k = v / (1-v). Therefore for ko = 0.8 , v = 0.445, but when I assigned this one Plaxis said v is too high.

Please explain why is this and how to generate the stress for ko = 0.8 using gravity loading (as the soil layer is not horizontal.

Thanks.

  • Dear Mr. Dennis,

    Please clarify this doubt also.

    01. In advanced model like HS model, konc represents the normally consolidated at rest coefficient and ko is correlated as shown below (based on the plaxis reference manual).

    How this equation is obtained?

    02. If I enter konc value, after certain range, error message came, what is the reason and how konc is interconnected with the modulus?

    03. How can ensure in ko procedure, whether the stresses are required only small equilibrium corrections or stresses are out of equilibrium?

    Thanks.
