Material Database For The Plate Element

Hi all,

01. When defining a vertical wall in Plaxis, use prevent punching option if is not a thin structure to take into account of end bearing. It the plate is defined as a horizontal (along the x-axis) and applies vertical and horizontal loading, then how will this "prevent punching" option work?

02. Sorry for asking, I couldn't understand this paragraph, please explain (Plaxis 2DCE-V20.04-2-Reference manual, Page: 276).

Thanks,

  • Hi,

    01. First of all, you shouldn't use the "prevent punching" option for end-bearing. The option should only be used if the calculation shows that punching is a problem while in reality it shouldn't have been. If  you're really interested in calculating with a realistic end-bearing you should for instance model the wall as volume elements. But the "prevent punching" option always works the same, also when the plate element is horizontal.

    02. What part is it that you don't understand? The paragraph explains that in plane strain conditions the stiffness of the plate is increased due to the boundary conditions of a plane strain analysis and that this increased stiffness can be expressed in terms of Poisson's ratio.
