How can I set up a cyclic impact of a hammer while pile loading (preferably in 2D)? I would like to see the displacement in the surrounding soil while the pile was hit 100 times (for example).
Thank you
Hi Antonio,
Does PLAXIS 2D Tutorial 15: Pile driving cover your modelling needs?https://communities.bentley.com/products/geotech-analysis/w/wiki/45567/plaxis-2d-tutorial-15-pile-driving
The example uses a dynamic load with a harmonic loading to simulate the pile driving process.
Hi Vasileios,
The tutorial is a good starting point, but I would like to set up the pile installation from the surface to a certain depth (and with multiple hammer hits). The tutorial has a pile that is already installed and it is hit only once.
Dear Antonio,
There is no way in which you can reliably model the installation of a pile so there is not much sense in trying this. One of the main reasons is that during pile installation the pile cuts through the soil, splitting the soil in going around the pile and in the process the skin friction surface increases with penetration. In PLAXIS soil is a continuum, hence the soil cannot be split to go around the pile and therefore the area of the pile in contact with the soil doesn't increase as the pile doesn't really penetrate.
With kind regards,
Dennis Waterman
Thank you.
