How Strain is converted into Displacement (Purpose is to find the initial value)

Hi all,

This may be the basic question but need to know that.

Question => Strain is the change in the dimension over the initial one, so it is provided as the percentage or fraction. In Plaxis stress will be derived from the induced strain and the modulus of the soil inputted (like shear modulus, bulk modulus, and odometer modulus from young modulus). So my question is when deriving the deflection from these strain values or vice versa how the initial values are defined?

Thanks.

  • Dear Nitharshan,

Strain is not converted in displacement, but displacement is converted into strain.

    The calculation order is:

Load change -> Displacement change -> Strain change -> Stress  change, after which the stresses are compared with the loads to make sure the stresses properly reflect the load applied.

The initial displacement is the displacement resulting from the previous calculation step, which is zero for the first calculation step and after "reset displacements to zero" is used.

    With kind regards,
