Hello there! I'm currently working on Tutorial 16: Free vibration and earthquake analysis of a building but with a different acceleration time history. I've made sure to set all the parameters and boundary conditions exactly as specified in the Tutorial. I've employed a free field boundary with a compliant base. When I view the output window, I notice that the displacement concentration at the corner of my model is higher than what I anticipated. According to my understanding, the displacement should ideally be zero at the last step, assuming baseline correction but again we still could see residual displacement.
Interestingly, I encountered a similar problem in my project-specific model, which prompted me to attempt this tutorial. I've included a figure below for reference. I would greatly appreciate any guidance or assistance in resolving this disparity.
Thank you!
Hello Zubair,
We can see large deformation at the top left/right conner in the model due to small shear strength of this soil at low effective stress (near the top surface). So, you may increase the horizontal size of the model to ensure that this large deformation does not affect much the structure behavior, which is the most interest, and ignore it. Alternatively, you may create a thin vertical clusters with higher shear strength at the horizontal boundaries to avoid soil collapsing there.
