Hi, I have an annulus modelled as a rigid body that is resting on the surface of the ground. Is it correct to set the geometric centre of the annulus as the reference point (in this case, the geometric centre of the annulus is not on the rigid body itself) and set some force components on it (force, moment etc.)? I tried it and the results seem to be incorrect.
Hi Alvin,
The reference point of a rigid body can be any arbitrary point (independent from existing geometry points). Setting the reference point on the centre of gravity is also acceptable. In fact, this is also required when running dynamic calculations considering all mass components of the nodes involved (see also Chapter 5.7.10 of the Reference manual)Of course, depending on where the reference point is defined, you can expect different results (e.g., due to different lever arms, points of rotation, etc.)I am unsure what you mean when you say that the results you are getting seem incorrect. However, if you have a case where you can pinpoint a discrepancy, please submit a new Case for further investigation.
