Discontinuos Pile Wall in Plaxis 3D

What is the best way to model a discontinuos pile wall in plaxis 3D for a braced excavation. As a plate with equivalent EI? as a volume element? or as embedded beam elements

If I do it as I plate as they are 1,2m piles with a separation of 1.5m between pile centers the stiffness parameters should be different in "1" and "2" directions" no?

Kind Regards

  • Hi there,

The advantage of PLAXIS 3D is that you can model the actual installation conditions of the pile wall without making any assumptions or taking equivalent properties. As such, an idea would be to model the pile as volume elements or embedded beam elements spaced out at the correct distances.
A plate element is also an option, although additional work is needed to accurately determine its equivalent properties. In any case, I expect some orthotropy in geometry and materials, which justifies using different stiffness values in each direction.
