Geogrid material in Plaxis 2D and 3D

What is the actual shape of Geogrid material in Plaxis 2D? Is it a 2-dimensional sheet or a one dimensional material like an anchor?

What is the shape of geogrid material in Plaxis 3D? Is it 2-dimensional sheet?

  • Dear Vipin,

As explained in our Reference manual:

For PLAXIS 2D: Geogrids are composed of line elements with two translational degrees of freedom in each node (ux, uy). When 15-node soil elements are employed then each geogrid element is defined by five nodes whereas 3-node geogrid elements are used in combination with 6-node soil elements. Axial forces are evaluated at the Newton-Cotes stress points. These stress points coincide with the nodes.

For PLAXIS 3D: Geogrids are composed of 6-node triangular surface elements with three translational degrees of freedom per node (ux, uy and uz). Element stiffness matrices are based on the properties as defined in the material data sets and numerically integrated from the three Gaussian integration points (stress points). The element can change length when a tension force is applied. Details about the element formulation are given in the Scientific Manual.
