Dynamic slope stability analysis

Good afternoon. I am working on a dynamic analysis on a slope model. I have a question about the X and B distances of the model. What distances are used to solve the problem. where you could find literature about it. Thank you.

  • Dear Sebastian,

This depends on various factors, for instance, the type of boundaries used, the intensity and duration of the applied signal, single- vs multi-directional loading, the existence of structures, thickness and characteristics of soil deposit(s), constitutive model(s) used, and more.

As you see there is no straightforward answer, but by running a few simple analyses and checking e.g., the obtained accelerations, displacements and excess pore water pressures (if any) at points located at different distances from the boundaries to evaluate the influence of boundaries on the obtained response (a rough idea is obtained simply by observing the displacements obtained at the end of the analysis) could help.

A very rough and generic recommendation is to have the boundaries placed at least 3 to 5 times the length of the slope far away from it.
