Hi,
Is there a way to define a criteria for automatically stopping a calculation in Plaxis2D/3D, for example stop the calculation if utot at NodeX > 1m? If not, this would be an extremely useful feature to have either as part of the scripting interface or via the calculation manager.
Best regards,
Dear Arnkjell,
Our finite element calculation is based on an equilibrium of forces. As a result, deformations develop in the model. Therefore, you need first to ensure that the calculation is in equilibrium before checking any results as they might be incorrect.
Note that interrupting the calculation in a specific deformation value would mean that the applied forces might not be in balance with the soil response which would lead to inaccurate outcome.

Dear Stefanos,
Thank you for your reply.
I assume that the forces in the calculation will be in equilibrium (to within specified tolerances) at the end of each calculation step and not just at the end of the phase? I am running a plastic calculation.
My question was related to whether it was possible, after each step has converged in the plastic calculation, to impose a check on whether the displacement at a given node is larger than some threshold value. For example in the figure below, stop if umax > 0.5m. I am running a large number of time-consuming 3D analyses where it would be very beneficial to remove "unneccessary" steps after a given displacement value is reached. I realize this will mean that the actual forces in the model will only be "Mstage" times the applied forces.
Yes, you are correct that we have equilibrium at each step, however, not the full load(s) will be applied as part of the staged construction procedure. I remind you, but you probably already know that the activation of all loads and self-weight of soils, structures are considered to be an out-of-balance force. In order to solve this out-of-balance, the calculation will use a linear relationship with the ΣMstage multiplier to activate these new loads: once ΣMstage reaches one [1], the full weight and loads are active in the model.
But I understand now your point and I can tell you that this is currently not possible. However, I consider it useful to pass it to our research team to see if we can introduce such a calculation option.
It will be great, if the research team can add this feature. As far as I know in the last MoDeTo V21 (PLAXIS Monopile Designer) there is a new slightly similar option for stopping calculations (Target displacement at mudline for Calibration):
