Hi all and Rushan Gizzatullin Stefanos Papavasileiou Dennis Waterman
I have 2 questions in this tutorial
01. For the drain, why the head is defined at 0m as phreatic line at 1m?
02. For the normal analysis they used time interval as 2,30 and 1 days and for analysis using drain they have used 1 day time interval , does it time interval based on the project requirement as they need to do construction quickly or any influence on the time? and graph shows excess pore pressure not reach the maximum as in the normal analysis (as role of the drain is speed up the consolidation and it need to remove the all excess pressure), why like that (as time depends, if so we can increase the time know, why provide only 1day time interval)?
Thanks.
Hi,
1) As can be read in the Reference Manual paragraph 5.10.2 (Drains) the Head value is only used in groundwater flow and fully coupled analysis, not in consolidation analysis. So it doesn't matter what you fill in for the Head in this Tutorial.
2) The whole purpose of using drains is that to dissipate excess pore pressures faster so that a) the peak value will be lower and b) we don't have to wait so long before continuing with the next stage of the embankment.
With kind regards,
Dennis Waterman
Dear Mr. Dennis,
Thanks for the great explanation, now understood. My questions is how to determine that time (in tutorial is given as 1 day)?
You can't determine the time a-priori. Just calculate it with a certain time, if it's too long you can make it shorter and if it\s too short just make it longer. Kind regards,
Noted with thanks
