Recently, I am trying to simulate a laterally loaded pile on Plaxis 2D. There are the following problems I am facing:
1. What kind of tool should I use for simulating a pile? For example, embedded beam row or plate? In set material, I have input parameter on circular tube, but I could not put it in model. Error was like "This feature is incompatible with existing feature"
2. How can I see the result by displacement and load in unit such as meter-kN?
If let me know the tutorial related to laterally loaded pile simulation, I will be appreciated.
Thank you.
Hi,
I couldn't get where you provide the material, can you show the screenshot here? If you use embedded beam row you can provide the shaft, base resistance which will present in the pile. but it is not advisable to design lateral loaded piles in 2D, please refer the reply on your one post.
2. If you model the embedded beam row there are options to see all the forces (im using only plaxis 2D).
here forces represents per meter length so you need to multiply by Lspacing to get actual force in a pile.
Thanks.

Dear,
Thank you for your support. Eventually, I made a model. But there is problem in calculation step as below. I have no idea what I did wrong.
Could you help me with this problem? After calculation, in output, there is no action in phase 1. It was still same as initial phase.
Why you provided the point displacement there?
Because of procedure of experimental test. Pile should be tested laterally 0.0196m through x direction.
Should I do it by point load?
If you can share this model , you can pack the project, put in we transfer and send the link here, then i will have a look and if i found anything will let you know.
<= use this to pack the project and zip file format will be there

This is the link. Best regards.

The basic errors I have found in your model are mentioned below.
01. Why the unit weight of the pile is 70 kN.m3? if you use self-weight or any axial loading you need to provide shaft / end resistance to resist that one. Your model provided high vertical displacement due to that.
if you scale up you can visualize how it goes
2. When creating the initial stress using ko procedure don't activate any structural elements, every procedure has certain limitations plz refer the reference manual
3. The lateral resistance can't be unlimited, you need to find the way to calculate and provide that values. There is a relation between L/D values or soil interaction values which define the pile in two categories as short and long piles. For the short pile soil failure is prominent before structural failure but in long piles structure failure is prominent before soil failure.
4. Your prescribed displacement 19.6mm is too high to resist by soil (press Ctrl + 6 to see the failure mode), if you provide like 6mm it may pass, please check that.
Hope it will help and Rushan Gizzatullin i mentioned some resource persons here who have lot of experiences to help you to explain more deeply.
First of all, thank you very much.
1. The pile material is cast iron. the unit weight of cast iron is 6.85 - 7.75 g/cm3. Consequently, it was converted to 70kN/m3.
2. Where can I provide end and shaft resistance from? I have a no idea about that.
3. I will try displacement by 6mm.
4. I hope i will get suggestion from them. I will send the message to them soon.
Best regards,
Hi ,
You are welcome and for resistance plz find the below screenshot.
You can refer the reference manual => embedded beam row material and resistance calculations (Pages 105, 284 in the V20, pages may vary based on version of manual )
